Yesterday, I played softball for the first time since I broke my hand on May 20. It was a doubleheader, and I played second base the first game & right field the next. It felt good to be back out there, and the hand is none the worse for the wear, too. My muscles are a little bit sore today, having not played for a while, but overall I feel pretty good. Oh, yeah – we won both games, too by 10-run rules, so that was good.
Collin also had a baseball game yesterday, which turned out to be the closest, most exciting game they’ve played this year. At one point, we were down 9-2 in the third inning, but we held them scoreless the next 2 innings and we scored 8 runs in the last 3 innings and ended up winning 10-9. Collin scored the winning run! We were tied 9-9 going into the bottom of the 5th inning (they only play 5 innings). Collin was the first batter. He got on first base, and so did the next batter (Collin’s friend Nicholas). The next batter got out at first, but Collin & Nicholas moved to 2nd and 3rd base. The next batter struck out, so we were down to our last out. Scott reminded him that he HAD to get to first base or the run that scores won’t count. He swung at the first 2 pitches, trying to kill the ball I think. Then the next pitch he finally hit the ball toward third. Collin ran like the wind to get home, sliding in with the winning run. I was coaching first trying to make sure that the runner got there safely, which he did. It was quite tense, and very fun at the same time. I was happy for the kids – they were excited to win the game, because this was a team we had lost to in our first game.
Next week, we have our last regular-season game, and then a single-elimination tournament that starts on Thursday. It’s been a fun year with the kids, despite some of the frustrations we’ve had with them being beginning players. They have all gotten so much better this year, as evidenced by this last game. I’m proud of all of them and glad to be their coach.
