Collin's baseball team had a pretty discouraging game Friday night, losing the game 21-1 against a pretty good team whose coaches kept running their players home even though the game was out of reach for us. That's my biggest pet peeve out there, is coaches who feel like they have to run up the score. That doesn't teach the kids anything, it only feeds the egos of the coaches and parents.
Anyway, the team was pretty discouraged after that game. I was not there, because I still wasn't feeling well enough after my wisdom tooth surgery to coach yet. But they had another game Saturday morning, which I went to. I was just hoping we would play well enough to score a few runs and keep the game close.
Turns out, the kids ate their Wheaties that morning because we won the game 25-8. And I coached third, but did NOT run the players unless the ball was still in the outfield. We had the bases loaded most of the time. We just kept hitting the ball well. One girl, who had struck out every time she batted so far this season, got on base twice. It was nice to see her feel like she was contributing to the team finally.
It was only our second win of the season, but the kids really needed a game like that after Friday night. I was beginning to think we might start losing some of them because they were getting discouraged. Next game is Wed. – hopefully they'll eat the same thing they ate before the last game…
